We recognize that this may not be sufficient for you. We dive a bit deeper into these steps in our article below. So check it out for details.

Let’s get into it.

How to Salt the Earth in Just 4 Quick Steps

Using salt to halt plant growth is an effective method that has been used for years. It is a cheap and easy method. But to make it work effectively, you need to do it in the right steps.

Sprinkling the salt strategically step-by-step is the key to make it work. We’ll show you how to do that in this section. But no matter which step you follow, you need to use good quality salt. Here are some you can try.

With these salts, you can carry out the below-mentioned steps with no problem.

Required Materials

To properly salt the soil, you will be needing a few ingredients. All of them are daily household products, so collecting them wouldn’t be a problem.

  • Rock salt
  • Spray bottle

Got the required tools? Great. Let’s jump into the steps.

Step 1: Sprinkle Salt at the Root Of Weeds

Take some rock salt and start with the existing weeds. The amount of salt depends on the number of weeds you have.

You can pluck the weeds out first. However, identifying its source would be more difficult. As a result, it is preferable not to do so.

At the root of weeds, sprinkle a few bits of the rock salt on the soil surface. Within a few days, they’ll start to perish from dehydration. You can pluck the dead weed out then.

Use a good weeb puller to make the job easier. Here are some you can check out.

These tools will help you tons to get rid of those pesky weeds.

Use salt sparingly. And don’t expect anything to grow there or in the immediate vicinity. That will be the case for a long time. Salt leaches into the soil, effectively sterilizing it and limiting vegetative regrowth.

Step 2: Apply Salt Between Bricks

One of the most unsightly and annoying places for grass to grow is between bricks. Not only that, but it is also super hard to pluck and get rid of.

Apply a small layer of rock salt between the bricks, pavers, or stones on your walkway. Any weeds or grass that grows there will be killed by it. And it will keep them away for years that will leave behind a cleaner stone or brick surface.

Step 3: Apply Salt in Pavement

Pavement and driveways should always be clean and smooth. Having unwanted grass or plants can ruin this entire notion.

Fill gaps and crevices in your pavement or driveway with rock salt. It’s best to use it on gravel pathways and roads. It will be active for an extended period of time, preventing reinfestation.

Step 4: Spray Salt Over Crabgrass

Take 1 gallon of boiling water + 1 cup of rock salt. Stir frequently until all of the salt has dissolved. Fill a small spray container halfway with the herbicide solution.

Make sure to use a spray container that works well with the solution. Here are some you can use for the job.

Use these spray bottle to thoroughly spray the herbicide solution.

Crabgrass and broadleaf weeds will benefit from this treatment. Five days later, reapply the solution. After five days, repeat the procedure with a third application.

You may get rid of unwanted plants from your lawn for good by following these methods.

Why Salt May Not Work for You?

Indeed salt is very handy to make soil infertile. And it’s quite effective too. But in some cases, they’re not so effective. This could be attributed to a variety of factors. Here are a few-

  • Salt is very soluble. So if it rains after you sprinkle salt, it will get washed away. This is especially seen during the monsoon.
  • Some plants can tolerate salt. Meaning, they can grow well even in the presence of salt. So if you are dealing with this kind of plant, it will need more than just salt.
  • Most plants are likely to be salt-tolerant if you live near the sea. This is why salt may not work in your case.

So there you go. If salt does not work in your case, then it could be due to any of the above reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Does salt ruin soil forever?

Answer: No. It is, however, difficult to remove from the soil. And there’s no quick method to get rid of it. The salt is trapped in the soil until rain washes it away. Depending on how much salt you apply, it could take years for rainwater to remove enough salt from the soil to make it viable for plant growth again.

Question: Will Salt prevent weeds?

Answer: Yes salt prevents the growth of weeds. When salt is taken by plant root systems, the water balance is upset. And finally causes the weed to droop and die. But it isn’t the most effective method.

Question: How long does bleach stay in the soil?

Answer: Bleach can last for up to two days when exposed to sunlight and rainfall. Due to these external factors, it deteriorates and becomes weaker by the day

  1. Thanks do much for this… I’m thinking of trying it for a 20×20 ft plot to kill grass and weeds. Unf we have a centipede problem. Large breed… 9 inch adults, freaky stuff.
Hoping this will make the earth uninhabitable for them as well as kill the weeds.
