Reason 2: Pulley Being Unable to Spin

The pulleys of your lawn tractor are turned by the spindles. And these are operated by the drive belt. When the blades are engaged, a pulley not spinning freely causes the mower to stall. Therefore, you need to fix it as early as possible.

To resolve this issue, first, remove the drive belt from the engine pulley. Then inspect the pulleys for sticking and damage. To engage the blades, lift the lever. The blade brakes are released when you engage the deck lever.

Reason 3: Bad Switches

A faulty safety switch could be the cause of the engine dying when the blades engage. So, you must resolve the issue as soon as possible!

The first step in evaluating the safety switch is to ensure that it’s securely plugged in. The switch is under the seat, and you may need to remove the seat to get to it. 

To do so, unscrew the bolts and slide the seat forward. Release the locking tab with a slot screwdriver and lift the seat away from the bracket. Rotate the switch and pull it out to inspect it. 

You can use a multimeter to test if it doesn’t look damaged. Set the meter to ohms and connect the internal contacts with each end.

The value should be 0 ohms. When you turn the switch on, it should read infinite resistance.
